Summer Reading

For once, my middle child is on top of his summer reading. If you have a middle child or one that is always a few beats behind, then you know how glorious this feeling is! Only about 3 more weeks until school starts, and we might make it to the summer reading finish line without arguments and tears. Wish me continued luck!

For me, I was always on top of my summer reading and feel like summer is the best time to read. There is a sense of relaxation about the summer and not having to worry if you stay up too late about finishing off the book, or a few extra chapters. When I’m in the mode, I read with a vengeance and can zip through books pretty quickly. I always seem to relish in the ones that take me a little longer than my norm to get through. The ones that make you stop and think.

I have read quite a few this summer that I have enjoyed that I thought I would share with you. The “stop and thinker” that I just finished was “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig. It wasn’t my favorite book of all times, but it was good, clever and made you think about how things could easily change. It was not overly heavy, but it was thought provoking which I enjoyed.

I also enjoy a good psychological thriller. But nothing that is silly or hokey, which many of them turn out to be. My new favorite was “The Good Sister”, by Sally Hepworth. She also wrote “The Mother-In-Law”, which was a great, page turner. “The Good Sister” wasn’t too intense, but it kept me guessing for quite a while, which is always a bonus!

Summer is always a wonderful time for beach reads, easy novels that take you away and have you longing for another beach trip and fruity cocktail. “Float Plan” by Trish Doller had me wanting to sell my worldly possessions and sail into the sunset. Well, not exactly, but I enjoyed the sailing setting and could picture the beautiful, blue Caribbean water as I read.

I am a big fan of Elin Hilderbrand, so I always look forward to her stories on the island of Nantucket. This summer’s, “Golden Girl,” did not disappoint and was a good mix of love, suspense and family drama. One day I will make it to her beloved island, hopefully with one of her future books in hand.

What have been your favorite summer reads this summer? Would love to hear from you! Comment below.

  1. Just downloaded “Float Plan” for our spur of the moment beach weekend! I was in between reads and picked up the book my 7th-grader is in the middle of reading and enjoying. The book is “The Absolute Truth of a Part-time Indian”. It’s a super quick read (finished it in a day), sort of “diary of a wimpy kid” format, and tons of great talking points! Word of caution – it is “rated” for high school because of some of the issues (abuse, bullying, alcoholism, violence) brought up, so you might want to read it first…

    1. Awesome, Amy! Hope you like Float Plan! It’s sweet! Will check out “The Absolute Truth of a Part-time Indian!” Thanks!
